Kernyl and pricing
What is Kernyl?
Kernyl is a team workspace with chat, issues, docs, calendar and built-in AI that a company installs in its own cloud. Its AI answers only from what each person is allowed to see, and the company's data stays in its own account.
How much does it cost?
From $15 per person per month for up to 150 people, $12 up to 500 and $10 up to 1,000, billed annually, plus a one-time installation of $10,000. Everything is included. You pay your cloud provider directly for what you run.
What does it take to run Kernyl?
A cloud account of your own. Kernyl and everything it needs run there, and we set it up with your team during the install.
Where is our data stored?
In your own cloud, in the region you choose.
Does any content reach Kernyl the company?
No. A license check-in sends the version, a health flag and user counts. Nothing else.
Where does the AI run?
In your own cloud. Prompts and answers never pass through us.
Can the AI reveal something a person can't open?
No. Permissions are checked at the moment of each question.
How do people sign in?
Single sign-on with Google Workspace or any OpenID Connect provider, limited to your domains. SAML and SCIM are not available yet.
Can we see and end sessions?
Yes. People see their devices and sign them out; admins can sign anyone out everywhere.
Is there an audit log?
Yes, for administrative actions.
Can we import from Slack, Jira or Confluence?
Slack import is in development and ships next. Jira and Confluence imports are planned after it.
Is there a mobile app?
Coming soon. Today Kernyl works in the browser and as a Mac app.
What cloud costs should we expect?
Typically $500–950 a month for up to 150 people, $1,300–2,500 for up to 500 and $2,600–4,900 for up to 1,000, paid to your cloud provider directly. The table above breaks it down. It depends on your region, how much you store and how much people use AI, and admins can cap monthly AI usage.
What is the install fee for?
A one-time fee of $10,000 covers getting Kernyl installed and configured in your own cloud with your team, including single sign-on and AI.
What's included?
Every tier includes Chat, Issues, Docs, Calendar and AI for everyone you add, with updates, maintenance and support. There are no add-ons to buy, and new apps are included as they ship.
How do renewals work?
Subscriptions are annual. Admins see a reminder in Kernyl 30 days before the license expires, and renewing keeps everything running with no change to your installation.
What happens if our license lapses?
Nothing is deleted, because your data is in your account. After expiry there is a grace period where everything keeps working. Then AI turns off and no new people can join; then Kernyl becomes read-only, where people can still read, search and export; finally only admins can export. Renewing restores full access.
What if we grow past our tier?
Kernyl allows a small margin over your tier's limit so nobody is locked out on a busy week. When you grow into the next tier, talk to us about moving up.
Security and your data
Is our data used to train AI models?
Not by us: we never receive it. Kernyl calls AI models that run in your own cloud, under your own agreement with your cloud provider.
Who installs and updates Kernyl?
We set it up with your team during the install. Releases and model updates are included in your subscription.
AI
Which models does Kernyl use?
Leading AI models, running in your own cloud. Model updates are included in your subscription, and usage appears on your own cloud bill.
Is our data used to train models?
We never receive your data, so we can't train on it. The models run in your own cloud under your agreement with your cloud provider.
Who can see my Ask conversations?
Only you. Ask conversations are private to the person asking, and you can delete them.
What if the AI gets something wrong?
It can, which is why every answer lists numbered sources. Open the source to check the original before you act on it.
What does self-hosted mean for Kernyl?
Kernyl is installed in your own cloud, AI included. We don't run a hosted copy and we never hold your data.
Do we need GPUs or our own model hosting?
No. Kernyl uses managed AI models in your cloud. You don't manage model servers.
Which clouds can Kernyl run in?
Tell us where you run, in a public cloud or your own data centre, and we'll confirm the setup on a call.
What does the AI have access to?
Only what the person asking can open, checked at the moment they ask. @Kernyl in a channel uses only what every member of that channel can see.
Moving from Slack, Jira or Confluence
Is there a self-hosted version of Slack?
No. Slack is only offered as a service that Slack runs. Teams that need chat inside their own infrastructure have to use a different product.
Can we import our Slack history into Kernyl?
Slack import is in development and is the next importer we'll ship. It works from the export file your Slack admin downloads, so channels can move across one at a time.
Does Kernyl work with our identity provider?
Kernyl supports single sign-on with Google Workspace and OpenID Connect providers. SAML and SCIM are not available yet.
Is there a Kernyl mobile app?
Not yet. Kernyl runs in the browser and as a Mac desktop app. If your team relies on mobile chat today, raise it on the demo so we can talk about timing.
How is pricing different?
Kernyl is priced per person: $15 a month for teams up to 150 people, less for larger teams, billed annually, plus a one-time installation. You also pay your cloud provider for the infrastructure Kernyl runs on.
We're still on Jira Server. What are our options?
Server products stopped receiving support and security fixes in February 2024. Atlassian's paths are its cloud or, for existing customers, Data Center until its end of life in March 2029. Kernyl is another option if your tracker needs to stay in infrastructure you control.
Can we import our Jira projects?
A Jira importer is planned, after the Slack importer that's in development now. Tell us on a call what you need to bring across and we'll share the timeline.
Does Kernyl support custom workflows and fields?
Not yet. Kernyl has statuses, epics, sub-tasks, labels, estimates, due dates and priorities. Custom workflows, custom fields, automation and a query language are on the roadmap.
Do we have to replace Slack and Confluence too?
No. You can start with Issues and keep other tools, though Kernyl is most useful as one workspace: issues show live in chat and docs, and AI answers across all three.
Is Confluence Server still supported?
No. Atlassian ended support for Server products, including Confluence Server, on February 15, 2024. Data Center remains available to existing customers until its end of life on March 28, 2029.
Can we import our Confluence spaces?
A Confluence importer is planned. The Slack importer is in development now and comes first. Tell us what you need to bring across and we'll share timing.
Can several people edit the same page at once?
Yes. Docs uses real-time co-editing, so everyone on a page sees changes as they're typed, and every version is kept in the page history.
What isn't in Kernyl Docs yet?
Inline comments on selected text, page-level restrictions on top of space roles, PDF export and a version diff view are on the roadmap. Page comments and version restore are available today.
